Ozone Sanitation As A New Growing Disinfectant

By Enid Hinton

Ozone, or O3, is a colorless or bluish gas. There is the natural one that protects us from the harmful UV rays of the sun and the artificial one found at the lower atmosphere which is a pollutant. The presence of the artificial one makes people see it as an element of air pollution. However, the gas is one of the strongest sanitizer present. Currently, most individual, companies and industries use ozone sanitation as an alternative to other types like chlorine.

The idea of using O3 came as early as 1990s and to present, it is still in widely across the globe. Specifically, it is being utilized to treat water for domestic use and sewerage, swimming pools, food processing industries to disinfect unprocessed goods, their packaging and storage facilities. In addition, sanitization of water is done and later recycled to serve additional useful purposes.

The gas is created when oxygen gets in contact with electricity. Its presence can be smelled around machines like photocopiers and electric motors. Nevertheless, the gas is unstable and can easily reacts with organic substances.

Due to its oxidizing and disinfecting power, it is seen as the best option cleanse drinking as well as industrial discarded water. The cleansing process starts when ozone interacts with microbial tissue which end up attacking and bringing them to their demise.

After it oxidizes, it regresses back to oxygen from which it was initially created. O3 application leaves no chemical remaining thus some individual see it as a disadvantage. As such, they go for other sanitizers that produces sanitizing residuals. Under normal conditions, it lives for about 10-20 minutes, therefore, it must be made electrically in large amount and used immediately.

O3 has more preference to different agents of sanitizers. It can in a split second oxidize organisms existing in a liquid substance. Additionally, no storerooms or specific care is needed during it formation. Nonetheless, different plants decide to try for chlorine since it is additionally successful and in particular moderate. Regardless of its adverse results to health of individuals, some still see chlorine as a finer choice for them.

Powerful oxidizing agents and disinfectants like ozone requires proper handling and care. As a result, many industries especially those dealing with food processing are discouraged in choosing the agent as an alternative to chlorine.

More properties and functions of the gas make it a better choice. For instance, it can minimize harmful by products from chlorine like the chloramines. Chloramines are responsible in causing irritations to the skins and body.

In short, the gas eliminates bacteria, viruses and mildews and oxidizes elements like sulfur and iron. Generators used to create the gas are safe for both people and the surrounding environment. The only by product produced is oxygen which is harmless and essential for survival of human race.

It is therefore essential for all individuals to use ozone sanitization to reduce any health related risks. Water is still an emerging and serious problem hence it is very important to ensure that the little we have is safe for any use.
