Kosher Meals Offer Many Viable Possibilities

By Lela Perkins

A great number of individuals must adhere to kosher dietary laws. While certain types of food are not allowed, there are plenty of foods available to those who seek kosher meals. Innumerable Jewish people prepare such meals in their homes, but there are countless restaurants that also follow kosher guidelines. Even various airlines and military branches provide options for those who cannot eat outside of the established dietary parameters.

Certain foods, like rabbit meat, pork, and some types of fish, cannot be eaten, according to kosher dietary rules. Other meats, such as deer, cow, and goat meat, may be eaten. Jewish people may also acceptably eat some kinds of birds. In the same meal, dairy foods and meat may not be served. It is important for those who must adhere to the guidelines to be aware of what the rules and boundaries are.

Cooking utensils must also be maintained according to custom. A pan cannot be used to prepare both meat and dairy foods, even if they are not prepared at the same time. The same concept is true of utensils such as plates and bowls that are used to hold food, and from which people eat.

Within the guidelines, there is a tempting array of foods that can be cooked, prepared and served. On a daily basis, numerous people prepare such foods in their home kitchens. A typical lunch could include boiled chicken eggs, pea soup, and salad. Dinner might consist of a side dish of celery and carrots, and a main dish of brisket of beef.

Countless restaurants are pleased to serve the proper foods to their Jewish diners. Many places prepare and cook exclusively kosher foods. A family could go to a restaurant to enjoy the Hungarian beef stew known as goulash. Office workers might frequent a favorite neighborhood delicatessen, ordering such things as pastrami sandwiches and bagels with cream cheese.

People may order catered meals that Jewish people can eat, for a wide variety of events. One might request an array of catered dishes, such as mushroom puffs and spicy chicken wings, to serve after a pool party. The individual planning a formal business luncheon may select such things as freshly baked bread, sushi rolls, and platters with vegetables and fruit. Dessert platters could be provided for children at an afternoon gathering, with tempting items that include cookies, pastries and slices of chocolate cake.

Commercial airlines and the military are known to accommodate the needs of Jewish individuals. When a meal is served on a flight, those who have requested the kosher option beforehand may be well satisfied. A meal on a plane could consist of an acceptable meat, a grain, and vegetables. In the military, special meals may be available to those who are enlisted, and who need to follow the special dietary laws of the Jewish faith.

Eating properly does not need to be a problem, whether one is traveling across the country, dining out, or preparing dinner at home. There is a wide array of options that people who require kosher meals may select. Jewish people have an abundance of tempting choices to consider, from warm bread, to chocolate cake, to sliced beef.
