Looking Back At The Modern Beer Festival

By Neil Lcb Feather

Modern beer festival celebrations are products of the distant past. In fact, this brewed beverage was drunk and enjoyed in ancient times. Today, you can find one of these events in all parts of the planet, and if you are lucky enough to attend, you may have an unforgettable experience.

Perhaps the most well-known of modern festivals is Oktoberfest. This event occurs every year in Munich and lasts for 16 days during late September and early October. It is so popular that the beer festival format has been copied across the globe.

Early October of 1810 is when the first Oktoberfest is known to have taken place, in Munich. This celebration was given for the royal wedding for Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Theresa. All the people of Munich were asked to attend. One of the most memorable parts of this celebration was the horse races that the Royal Family enjoyed. The races were the main reason that the tradition was carried on and Oktoberfest has been held annually except for times of epidemics or war.

If you are a resident of Britain, you may wish to attend the GBBF, or Great British Beer Festival. This event is also called the "biggest pub in the world". It is host to some 450 beers and there are many local as well as imported selections. Each year in August, over 1000 people give their time to make sure the GBBF is a success.

CAMRA or the Campaign for Real Ale sponsor the GBBF, which first began in 1975. CAMRA which itself formed in the early 1970's champions well produced real ale from independent brewers. At the first beer festival over 40,000 people consumed more than 150,000 pints of real ale. The GBBF is the largest beer festival in UK and normally held annually in London, however it was cancelled once in 1984.

Oktoberfest and the GBBF are are two of the largest beer festivals that take place each year. However they are only a small part of the beer festival culture that takes place around the world. Look on-line for a good beer festival and there is chance that you can find one near you. They occur at all times and in almost all places.
