Tips On Catching Maryland Blue Crabs

By Marla Mills

The state of Maryland is famous for crabs and you can find Maryland blue crabs images on almost anything ranging from promotional shits to caps and all sorts of gift items. This is not all there is about these crustaceans. There is more you need to know especially if you intend to sample out the crab as a local delicacy when visiting.

Before you can go crabbing, you need to make sure you have a license because everyone above 14 and below 65 years needs a license to take part in this activity. To purchase your license, you can visit any of the local stores where you can buy fishing items such as baits, hooks and lines. When you buy it locally, you only pay $5 but anyone purchasing from outside the state pays double this amount.

The only groups that are exempt when looking at this licensing requirement are seniors above 65 years and kids below the age of 14. This should not scare you if you intended to go on a trip with this activity in mind. The license only costs $5 if you buy from within the state. You will have to pay twice this amount if you buy from outside the state.

Dip nets are also a good choice because you can get more crabs using these items. Remember to include a good container to keep your catch. Some people also use lines or twines. The best container to keep your catch is a cooler with a lid because it will keep your catch very fresh for a longer time. These things are best when they are fresh.

Among the most common items used to catch crabs include hook and line, twines, dip net and baits to attract the crab to the trap. When you set out, you should make sure you carry along a container. Use buckets with lids or coolers that can keep the catch fresher for longer. You also have the option to choose between live bait and rubber baits.

It is advisable to understand that you also need to bring along a good container top keep your catch. A cooler or a bucket with a lid and some ice are good options. By doing this, you can be able to keep the crabs in a fresh state for longer. No one wants to bring home some crustaceans that are already stale for a meal in the evenings.

The steps you take when you set out to catch crabs should be well calculated. There are many things that you need to master but the most important ones are timing and patience. You should learn how to put the bait on line and lower it into the water.

At the time you notice the Maryland blue crabs eating your bait, you should scoop your dip net underneath and pull the creature out. Swift action will help you get the catch you need. If you have luck on your side, it will not take you long before you can be crabbing just like the locals do.
