A food handler's certification will teach specifics such as cooking and holding perishable goods at the proper temps, rotating stocked items, cleaning methods, sanitation requirements and symptoms of illnesses from improper preparation. Almost all establishments must undergo health inspections, some of which are unscheduled. Being prepared for these inspections can make the difference between a reputable business - one that does not pay attention to detail will be subject to fines and possible shut-down.

You may plan on working in a club or bar - if so, an alcohol awareness class is necessary. This teaches the importance of being sure that guests are not over served and also gives guidance as to how to handle situations where a guest has had too much to drink. This reduces the liability and risk of the facility and the employees.

Learning about nutrition is also very advantageous especially in jobs at schools, nursing homes and day cares. Classes on balanced meals, vitamin and mineral content, and caloric intake are valuable to everyone but especially young children and the elderly. This knowledge will assist you in determining the best foods for specific individuals in your facility.

The opportunity to receive on-the-job training is priceless. It reduces the monetary amount necessary to learn about an aspect of the hospitality business as well as gives individuals hands-on experience. A willingness to follow directions, a can-do attitude and the initiative to always go the extra mile will give you job security and future financial rewards. Beware though, jobs in this industry are notoriously demanding - the long hours and stamina required deter many from this profession.

Apprenticeships are often available for individuals who wish to pursue positions such as an executive chef, baker or pastry chef. Some schooling would be required but much of the training would be received by working under someone with exceptional skills which you hope to acquire someday.

Choose the coursework and assistance you need for the particular career you are focusing on. If you plan on working at a private club, you will need alcohol awareness training but you will not need it if you work at a nursing home. Knowing the proper temperatures to cook and hold food is not necessary if you are a server but the information is still good to know if a change in jobs becomes necessary.

Food service training will allow you to progress in your career at an accelerated rate. Being informed on current trends, sanitation developments and customer satisfaction will push you to the top of your competitors. Having a propensity to learn new and advanced techniques and having a knowledge of many areas of food service will give you limitless careers to choose from, now and in the future.
