Way To Beef Cattle Genetics

By Linda Cantrell

It consists of the use of beef cattle that are superior in terms of their genetic make up to take the role of the parents of the next generations. Since the main aim of the farmers and all those individuals who rear these beef cattle is to make profit, Beef Cattle genetics modification is the answer to their quest. It measures the farmer ability to reach their specified set targets. The Angus and the Hereford are examples of beef cattle.

Through the use of genetics, species such as the Belgium Bluebull have resulted. This breed is often defined by the presence of excess muscles in their body and their meat is also of a great amount. They gain weight at a high rate and they usually consist of about 40% more extra muscle compared to other ordinary beef that have not been genetically modified. This is a profit to the farmers since they are able to fetch more money in the market.

A disadvantage of this genetic modification is that the calves often develop extra large tongues and this can lead to their early death. Also, due to their large size, they often experience a lot of pain while giving birth hence most births are through caesarian section.

There are other methods of improving production such as the use of Artificial Insemination(AI) in this method, frozen semen is usually put into the cow reproductive tract hence an offspring is produced that has the desirable qualities that the farmer desires. Uniformity of the calves is created such that they are of the same age and they have the same genetic makeup. In the market, those that express the trait of uniformity fetch a higher price hence more advantageous.

Hybridization is another form of genetic engineering. This is also referred to as selective breeding. It is done by crossing of two breeds that have different but desirable traits or genes to produce what is known as a hybrid offspring that has both of the traits in it. The result the production of bulls for meat which has high quality beef which is a benefit to farmers.

A group of offspring that are genetically similar can be produced from the cells of a particular organism and this is what is called cloning. This results to their production have desired qualities and this is an overall advantage to the farmers who are in love with rearing of cattle especially this particular species.

There are however, a group of people who are against cloning. They base their argument on the fact that cloning makes their animals to be oversize. In addition to that, the animals appear weak and fall ill most of the time. The great question becomes why people should prefer high productivity but risk their cattle dying.

In summary, economic profit is the main reason behind the use of genetic modification to improve production of this species. The rate of these animals falling sick is also greatly reduced. In the world of today, many people are now able to afford bulls hence the demand is going up. Genetic modification is seen to be the answer to meet these demands. However, processes that have negative consequences to the animals are better avoided.
