By Karina Frost

There are many things that make a person happy. For some, happiness is found with pets. Some need to be with friends or with family. Some go to distant places. Some derive it from just a quiet evening at home. For some, happiness can be found in food.

Speaking of food, this is one of the most basic needs one has to have in order to truly survive. Aside from human beings, all living creatures that roam the earth also have to eat to survive. It is where the nutrients and energy that one needs is derived. Without food, humans will never last long. They will also be hindered from doing all the things they need and want to do. Genuine food lovers even take it to the next level and consult seasonal recipes for the next best meal.

There are certain times in a year when a certain agricultural product is at its best. They abound in numbers, looking and tasting better after the other. Seasonality refers to this set period when the best foods are also at their most cost effective yet.

There are many good reasons why you should jump in the seasonal bandwagon. As aforementioned, eating what is in season is absolutely easy on the wallet. Because there is a high supply more than the number of demand, the said food comes cheaper than when you buy it another given time.

When the fruit is at peak, they also taste far better. Anything fresh always taste better, and will last really longer. When it is not in season, the taste is invariably affected as well. Locally harvested foods often have their whole flavors intact, which they also release in whole when eaten. Chilling them somehow takes some of the freshness away, which is often what is done when items are bought off peak.

What is also enjoyable about eating in season is that you get variety all year long. This will give you a wide array of options on what to consume next instead of eating the same dishes over and over again. You can always visit the farmers market near you for a more enjoyable culinary experience.

They also provide you with good food without having to go really far. You can save gas from driving to the nearest grocery, and you will not be required to look presentable especially when your source is as convenient as the vegetable patch found in your own backyard. There is nothing like the feeling of eating what you have grown, too.

Organic foods are now within your reach without having to spend too much or wander too far. You can now prepare meals without fear of harming your family. Most often, the chemicals ingested from commercially grown produce will have negative effects to the body.

It also unleashes the environmentalist in you. By being in favor of a seasonal diet, you can help save the planet without too much effort. If everyone chooses to utilize local crops, then commercial ones will eventually die out in the market.
