How To Obtain Certified EVOO

By Phyllis Schroeder

With so many brands to choose from, it can be a challenge to find the right olive oil for cooking. This is why a person needs to inform themselves on how to purchase certified EVOO so that they will not waste their money on something that is not real. Here are some tips to keep in mind when purchasing this type of product.

One way to tell if an olive oil brand is worth the money is by the date that is printed on the bottle. Since this type of oil is perishable, this can be a guide on how long one has to use the product. It is even better if the date on the bottle shows the consumer when the product was packaged as this is a better indicator of how long one has to use the oil.

If it is on a shelf for too long it could go rancid. In addition, one has to consider how the oil was bottled which can also affect how long the oil lasts. If the bottle is clear as opposed to dark, the light going through the clear bottle could shorten the shelf life of the oil. If it is stored in a place that is too hot this also affects the quality.

There is also the issue of pricing because some believe that the higher the price of the oil, the better it is. This is not necessarily true and one should be careful not mistake the price for the quality. There are a number of lower priced oils that are just as good or even better than the more expensive ones on the shelf.

If a brand of oil stays on the shelf for too long, the quality becomes less over time. The most important thing to look for is the certification that the oil is genuine. This could be done by looking for a seal of approval from an organization that tests the oils, or for an ingredients list that shows the type of olives that have been used to make the oil.

When looking into the issue of which olive oils are genuine, it is important to know who did the research. There are many companies who finance the research into which oils are the real thing or not in order to promote their brands. However, this does not necessarily mean that they are selling genuine products. There are a few reasons why they would do this.

This does not mean that their oil is not legitimate, but it simply means that one should be aware of who is doing the testing and the research. If a consumer is knowledgeable about quality oils, they will know if the research is valid or not. It is also a good idea to stick with local brands or even local mills. This way, a person can know how olive oil is made and what to look for.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when looking for genuine extra-virgin olive oil. It is important to read the labels so that one will know what they are getting. Also, some research can be done on the various types of oils and their tastes and colors so that one will be acquainted with how a particular oil should be.
