By Dorothy Fisher

Health and fitness has taken off so much in the last few years that billions are spent every year for research and product development. Everyone wants to know how they can improve their health levels, boost their metabolism and lower their cholesterol levels, all on a satisfying meal plan and without sacrificing taste. Luckily for you, kosher meals can accomplish all of that while teaching you a thing or two about the strict guidelines that the Jewish population lives by.

The actual term of this lifestyle lays out the rules and regulations by which the Jewish people must live by in terms of food. There are sections that contain the food that is permitted, and sections that detail which foods are forbidden for consumption. Besides these guidelines, there are strict measures that must be taken to ensure that all food is prepared in the correct way, otherwise even permitted food can become unlawful.

The only land animals that are fit for consumption must have hooves, as well as only consume from the plants and vegetation on the ground. Bearing this in mind, there are four distinctly unlawful animals for consumption, including the hare, the hyrax, pigs, and camels. Also unlawful for consumption are water birds that prey on fish, and birds of prey which prey on other animals.

One of the most highly revered and accepted laws on food involve the consumption of blood. It is clearly stated that due to the life giving powers of blood, it is undoubtedly forbidden. There are some exceptions to this rule, as some scholars state that where the blood cannot be completely removed from the meat due to the structure of the meat product, it will be permissible to eat once sufficient draining of the visible blood has been completed.

Certain animals are banned from consumption, and their meat is considered unlawful to be consumed. Besides this distinction, the food products that are derived from animals are also considered to be unfit for consumption. This means that milk from these animals is also considered to be unlawful, and any products made from this milk, such as cheese or yogurt, will automatically become unlawful.

Most ancient scriptures are unanimous when voting that the milk produced by animals whose flesh is labelled kosher, is also considered a permitted food. All animals who are found to have been afflicted with a disease before slaughter is considered to be forbidden, and therefore any milk from this animal is sometimes also considered unlawful for consumption. However, some scriptures dictate that since the animal itself is considered to be from the permitted section, it is often ruled as a permitted food.

Gelatin is another topic that is rife with opposing views, as some scholars state that because it is of questionable animal origin, it is considered unlawful. Others state that because the structure of the animal product has been chemically altered into something that no longer resembles its origin, it is lawful for consumption. Whatever the case may be, there are many other substitutes for the gelatin that can be used as a binding agent.

Discover the true value of these delicious meals when you incorporate it into your life. Get your lifestyle back on track now.
